What is your business? How long has the business been operating?
I run a Garden maintenance business. It been going for over 10 months. The business is going really well. I have secured a big sub contract that has allowed me to employ 3 other people and we have so much work that I have had to turn some weekend work away. We are working 5 days a week and doing 10-hour days.

What were you doing before you made contact with Many Rivers? What was your previous work experience?

I was driving trucks in the mines and that work saw me away from my family for weeks at a time so that was tough. Than secured another truck driving position that was poorly managed. It was hard to work for this manager, so I had to make a change.

Who referred you to Many Rivers? When?
I had an idea for a business and I heard about Many Rivers through other people in town. I reached out as I had the idea to start this business but needed help with how to get started. They helped me work out my business plan and cashflow.

Why did you want to go into business?
I really enjoy this type of work. I love being outdoors and there are so many health benefits with working outdoors and keeping fit. I was motivated to work for myself rather than someone else. It gave me the opportunity to offer employment for others and a couple of the guys that work for me were on Centrelink before they worked with me. I also employ my daughter who is raising 2 young kids. This gives her some work experience and income to support her family.

What services did you receive from Many Rivers? How did it help?
Many Rivers helped with marketing my business, helped with advertising and promotion. They got me set up and got the business registered and worked with me to write my business plan.

What did you find the most useful about the assistance from Many Rivers?
Ariel has been a great support. He was always easy to get in touch with and I knew I could always go to him for help. It’s good to know you have that backup. I feel supported.

Do you have any current employees? If so, how many employees? Are they full time or part-time?
I have 4 Indigenous employees on the books along with my daughter who works part time helping with the book keeping. A couple of the guys that work for me were on Centrelink before this job. I like to offer work to young people and help them off Centrelink.

What has been the biggest challenge to date?
The hot weather! It’s challenging work at times in this heat. Managing staff and finding the right staff members to commit is also a challenge.

What has been the biggest change for you/your family since you started your business?
I get to spend more time with my family. I have 6 grand kids and when I was working in the mines I was away for so long that when I got home my grandkids barely knew me. And I was so tired I didn’t want to do much. Now I get to spend more time with them and I have more time for them.

Also, being able to get my daughter involved and helping her increase her computer and business skills has been rewarding. She has 2 kids, her eldest goes to school this year so I hope one day she will join the business full time.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to start their own business?
You have to want to do it. If you do want to start a business, get some advice, have a go and run with it.
