Headz Up Hairdressing
Maitland, NSW | June 2015

What were you doing before you made contact with Many Rivers?
I was made redundant from a mining position so I was unemployed and struggling for 18 months. Mum and dad put together some money so I could buy a hairdressing business otherwise I’d be unemployed basically. When I needed to find the rest of the money I found Dylan.

What is your previous work history and experience?
I had been a hairdresser for 16 years prior to the mining job. My husband at the time went out west to work so I fell into a mining job because it was available.

Who referred you to Many Rivers? When?
I went to the BEC at Kurri. The girl there was helpful (receptionist). They name dropped Dylan’s name so we hounded everyone else to get his contact details. I met Dylan in January about 2 weeks prior to settlement of the business. If I didn’t get the help from Dylan I would have lost the $5,500 deposit at that stage. That was 22 weeks ago. Having a business is like being pregnant so I count every week! … Continue reading →

Trevor Deshong, Mesiah Guitars Australia
Cairns, QLD | June 2015

What were you doing before you made contact with Many Rivers?
I’d been an artist most of my life and was plodding along making ends meet. I put my hand to building guitars about three years ago. I’d bought guitars before and was thinking how hard could it be? You look at it and you go it’s wood and it looks good so someone must have done it. I do appreciate nice guitars. I was just really struggling to build something that might impress someone enough to sponsor or endorse my product as a craftsman.

What were you doing before you made contact with Many Rivers?
I was working in a full-time position with Woodside as their Indigenous Affairs Advisor in Karratha.  During my time in Karratha, I spent a lot of time with the Yinjaa-Barni Art, which is one of the art groups in Roebourne.  During that time I started painting and developing my technique with my art work. That led to me looking at developing my own business in fashion design and creating my own clothing range and stuff.

What is your previous work history and experience?
Well, I worked for Woodside.  And I now work for Wunan as part of their Transitional Housing Program, and I’m a Money Mentor.

Who referred you to Many Rivers? When?
Many Rivers had actually worked with my Mum, helping her to develop her business in Halls Creek.  Mum mentioned them to me when I told her what I was looking at doing, and asking her who I could talk to about creating my own business.  I also knew a bit about them from working for Woodside, but I didn’t really have a full understanding of what Many Rivers’ role was until I had a chat to my Mum. … Continue reading
